According to Brent Spiner, his character's name, Data, was intended to be pronounced "dat-uh," as was more commonly used in American English, but Patrick Stewart used the British pronunciation of "day-tah" during the first table read, cementing the pronunciation for the remainder of the series. Spiner also credits Stewart's pronunciation for making "day-tah" the more commonly used pronunciation of "data" in American English.
