The series takes place in the 24th century, the same century as L'eroe del XXIV secolo e mezzo (1953). Mel Blanc provided the voice for the title character so he could have appeared as a guest in episodes of this series, as he was still alive for the first two seasons. Star Trek: The Next Generation: Peak Performance (1989)(#2.23) was the last episode to air before his death.
