Michael Jackson lobbied to play the Riddler, but he was turned down. Matthew Broderick also expressed interest in the role. Director Joel Schumacher cast Jim Carrey because Schumacher and Warner Bros. felt that he was perfect for the part, following the success of Ace Ventura - L'acchiappanimali (1994).
