Lawrence Kasdan was originally asked to handle script-writing duties by himself. However, he had already started a career as a director, and was in pre-production for his next film, Il grande freddo (1983). He wrote the first draft and took turns with George Lucas on alternate drafts. Barbara Benedek would write drafts of The Big Chill while Kasdan was working on this film. Both films ended up being released a few months apart.
