The recurring scene of a submarine exploding after a 'torpedo' hit is actually film from Operation Deadlight, the intentional scuttling in the Atlantic by the U.S. Navy of German U=-boats after the war. The submarine in the scene is actually a Type IX U-boat. The submarine shown does not have a main gun forward of the sail.
