Very little is seen of the Guild Navigators, the evolved beings that control space travel utilizing the Spice that drives much of the story. The film does not show what happens in the jump from star to star or planet to planet, the only hint being the long tunnel-like crafts that smaller ships emerge from above planets. In the scene where Reverend Mother Mohiam arrives on Caladan to test Paul, the planet she travels from can be seen through the tunnel, suggesting that the journey is somehow taking place instantaneously. In Dune lore, it is indeed explained that the Guild can "fold space", meaning that the point of departure and destination are being brought very close together through quantum mechanics, so that ships can make the trip without moving at all. The complex calculations necessary for these trips can only be done by Spice-enhanced Navigators of the Guild, explaining why Spice is so vital for interstellar travel and trade, and why the Guild has the monopoly on this means of transportation.
