In both the Theatrical Cut and the Rogue /Director's Cut of the film, at the Paris Peace Accords, Logan loses his grip on his past self due to rage from his encounter with Major Stryker. He accidentally wounds Kitty with his adamantium claws, causing her to lose blood steadily. As that happens, future Charles explains that he saw a darker version of the future when he looked into Logan's mind in the past. It is never explained what exactly the 'Darker Version' of the future is, but it could be the bleak future of the final Wolverine film, Logan. So, in short, the X-Men never saved their future. They only sealed their doom.
