This movie is almost as self-referential as the first Scream (1996), constantly mocking things that are actually happening on the screen. For instance: When Ghostface menaces Tara in the opening scene, he mentions how it resembles the opening of 'Stab', which of course means it is also a copy of the original opening scene of Scream (1996);Richie notices the similarities between the Stab movies and the Halloween - La notte delle streghe (1978) series, like the Scream movies themselves also follow many of the same beats as the Halloween franchise;Characters mention that the Stab franchise is past its prime and should have ended long ago, a sentiment that has been made about the Scream series as well;Mindy explains the need for a 'Stab sequel' that fixes the problem of the previous, poorly received installment, which pulls fun at the fact that Scream (2022) now tries to reinvigorate the series where the poorly received previous sequel, Scream 4 (2011), failed to do that;Requels are derisively referred to as "fanfiction"; Scream (2022) was also made by fans of the original series, but without the original production company and director, technically making it fanfiction as well; The "Dead Meat" podcast criticizes the previous Stab movie for not even having a number in the title; this Scream movie doesn't have one either; There is a memorial party for the character Wes in the movie, which is of course at the same time a tribute to Wes Craven, the director of the previous installments;During the party, Matthew Lillard has a voice cameo as the guy yelling "'Cool house, Freeman!"; they are actually standing in his character Stu's former house; As Mindy is watching TV, the killer is behind her as she jokingly warns the Randy character in 'Stab' that the killer is behind him, while 'Randy' is watching Halloween - La notte delle streghe (1978) and warns Jamie Lee Curtis that the killer is behind her;Richie finally wonders how fandom could be toxic, claiming that it is all about love for the art, while he is clearly a deranged fan who has gone far beyond love to save his favorite franchise.
