Art director Lee Cole redesigned Spock's science station for this film. The station has four panels of small buttons, inspired by the bass buttons on the left hand side of an accordion (which Cole played as a child). Like the buttons on an accordion, the center button on each panel is indented, so the operator can tell by touch which buttons they are pushing. This explains how Spock can operate his console without looking down.
