When Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) has a 1911 gun to his forehead and doesn't flinch when the thug pulls the trigger, he replies with "There's no magazine in it." A 1911 pistol will still fire a chambered round even with the magazine removed and Rake (being proficient in firearm safety considering he's ex-military) would have known that and wouldn't assume the gun was safe without a magazine.
