Jensen Ackles auditioned for the role of Soldier Boy in Season 3 after a phone call he had with Eric Kripke in 2020. Jensen and Kripke worked together on Kripke's show, Supernatural (2005), where Jensen played Dean Winchester. They were discussing another project Jensen was working on when the role of Soldier Boy was mentioned to Jensen. After auditioning via a self-recorded audition, Jensen was offered the role.
