Symbolically, while testing out their custom-made vespa, Luca and Alberto's vespa breaks in half mid-air before they fall in the water. When they resurface, each boy is on opposite sides of a rock. This foreshadows not only their falling out, but also Luca going to school with Giulia while Alberto stays behind in Portorosso.
