This film has a drastically different ending from the previous versions from 1931 and 1940, set in WWI. In the 1931 version, the female lead is killed in an air raid, and in the even darker 1940 version she commits suicide by jumping off Waterloo Bridge. Also, in this production, Gaby supports herself as a ballet dancer and not as a prostitute as in the earlier versions.
