Paul Gallico got the idea for the novel after being hit by a rogue wave while he was a passenger on R.M.S Queen Mary in the 1930s. L'avventura del Poseidon (1972) used R.M.S Queen Mary for exterior shots and the exterior of Poseidon in this movie used the modern R.M.S Queen Mary II as inspiration.
