At the beginning of the first season, there was always clapping at the end of the first segment as this was the format for all Norman Lear sitcoms, where the first segment was like the first act of a play; the clapping was supposed to signify the end of that first act. However, as with all his other sitcoms in 1980, Lear changed his format, and they stopped adding pre-recorded clapping at the end of each segment. You can see the change in format on all his shows that season, Archie Bunkers Place, The Jeffersons, Different Strokes, and One Day at a Time.
