The mission was based on the Mission San Juan Bautista, which Scottie rightly describes as including a museum. A few sequences were filmed there but most used back-projected still photos of the site.. The original steeple had been lost in a fire some fifty years earlier so Hitchcock created one for the movie using a combination of miniatures, matte paintings and studio sets. The shot of the tower from above after the incident presents an extremely obvious matte.
