According to Kevin Sorbo (on the DVD audio commentary for Hercules: Full Circle (1999)) the show was not canceled due to ratings, but it ended because of contract negotiations. While Sorbo was willing to continue and make a full final season, the studio wanted him to commit to three more full seasons. Sorbo did not want to commit to three more seasons due to the opportunity to star in Andromeda (2000). According to Sorbo, the studio would not budge on the three season commitment, resulting in the abbreviated final season.
