The show's producers successfully established and maintained an ensemble cast format by having several episodes focus around Geordi LaForge, Deanna Troi, or Wesley Crusher. This was meant to improve upon Star Trek (1966), which largely focused on Kirk, Spock, and McCoy in every episode at the expense of the show's supporting characters. The ensemble format was used in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Enterprise (2001).
