Sony had chosen to replace director Ruben Fleischer due to his commitments to Zombieland - Doppio colpo (2019). Fleischer expressed his approval with Andy Serkis' hiring, having grown disillusioned with making a follow-up after the harsh critical reception the first film experienced.
