Kitamura's favorite Godzilla movies were the ones from the 1970s. He said "My favorite Godzilla movie was Godzilla contro i robot (1974). I think in that time, Godzilla had more power and speed, stronger than what he's been recently. I don't like recent Godzilla movies - not saying which one - but Godzilla has lost its power. So, the first thing I do for the producer, when he asked me to direct the 50th Anniversary film, is tell him that Godzilla is too weak!" He had a very low opinion on the Godzilla films produced between 1984 and 2004. In a 2007 interview with the Otaku Magazine, he said "I don't go see Godzilla movies anymore. They were great back in the day, but after the 80s, they're all shit. You guys forget to update and you just keep doing the same thing again and again. And now even kids don't want to go. They've seen The Matrix and Lord of the Rings. You can't fool them. Of course it looks like a man in a suit! You shoot everything with that bright light!
