The film was a huge hit in the UK on release and has also gone on to be a cult film there (it was also well received in France). But it underperformed in the United States and went relatively unnoticed. Sir Michael Caine has said he believes that this was because American audiences may have thought the film was far too 'British', Italian-Americans may not have appreciated the tongue in cheek nature of the plot, and US audiences in general were unaware of the British cultural references and dark humour scattered throughout.
