The first screening of this movie (using an early cut) was reportedly a disaster, with George Lucas deriding the editing, and the fact that it didn't feel like a Star Wars movie. Eventually, editor Sean Barton did his own cut that Lucas preferred a lot more, and it was this cut from which the final version was crafted.
