Writer Dan Gordon was initially contracted to also direct the film. When he screen tested the original actor who was going to play Wendell, the character was written as a dumb surfer (Gordon at first wanted his son Yoni for the role, but the studio wanted a real actor). The actor was really good but the head of New Line Cinema, Bob Shaye, thought the actor was so stupid that he fired Dan Gordon on the spot. "That's the dumbest fucking kid I ever saw in my life," Shaye exclaimed, "How could you cast him?" Gordon looked at Shaye and said, "Bob, have you read the script?" Shaye obviously hadn't read the script, but he turned to Gordon and said, "You know what? Fuck you. You're fired." Bob Shaye, fired Dan Gordon and brought on Neal Israel.
