Near the film's ending, when Khan sent the U.S.S. Vengeance on a collision course with San Francisco, she crushes Alcatraz on her way towards the city. According to J.J. Abrams, this was a sly nod to the fact that the series Alcatraz (2012) (which he executive produced) was canceled after only one season.
