An alternative theory for Leela's name is that she is named after Leeloo, the female alien from the film Il quinto elemento (1997), played by Milla Jovovich. Both characters are strong female leads, both are martial artists with seemingly superhuman strength, both characters have blue eyes (though rarely drawn in Leela's case), and both characters have oddly colored hair (bright red for Leeloo, purple for Leela), but share no other similarities.
