The film premiered at the Rivoli Theater in New York on February 5, 1936. The opening had been delayed by a few weeks because Sir Charles Chaplin felt the picture was not quite ready. He did not attend the premiere because the last time he made a public appearance in New York he "had a terrible time battling through the crowds" everywhere he went and dreaded the prospect of "being stared and pointed at as though I were a freak."
