The third film in an unofficial trilogy by Kar-Wai Wong, the other two being Days of Being Wild (1990) and In the Mood for Love (2000). Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Maggie Cheung reprise their roles from "In the Mood for Love," while Carina Lau reprises hers from "Days of Being Wild." While each film can be viewed as a standalone story, critics and Wong generally encourage watching all three, as "2046" references and builds upon the stories of the other films.
