The movie was inspired by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy's classic comedy short La scala musicale (1932) with the picture's title being derived from the pair's comedy movie Un nuovo imbroglio (1930). One of music composer Henry Mancini's pieces on Un bel pasticcio! (1986)'s soundtrack is actually entitled "Stan And Ollie" (after the nick-names of Laurel & Hardy).
