As this was anticipated to be the last film with the original series cast, there were rumors that Captain Kirk would be permanently killed off in it. The rumors were fueled by a trailer featuring the image of Kirk being vaporized by a phaser. The scene was actually of Martia being killed after shape shifting into a double of Kirk.
