Co-screenwriter Michael Herr relates that they visited a firing range and Stanley Kubrick was surprised to find out that someone who had spent so much time in a war zone could be such a lousy shot, so the director gently teased him: "Gee, Michael, I'm starting to wonder if you have what it takes to carry a rifle in my beloved corps!"
