Multiple times in the series, Reacher declares himself to be a hobo rather than a vagrant; the comment is made once in the book, but without any explication. While both terms generally reflect the idea of being a homeless wanderer and are often used interchangeably, there are some differences between the terms that the pedantic Reacher would feel to be important. Historically, a hobo sought to work wherever they traveled, where a vagrant would beg or steal for their sustenance. A hobo generally tried to show respect to their host community, as embodied in what was once an actual code of ethics. Vagrancy has been associated with a number of crimes and social ills; U.S. vagrancy laws were frequently enacted to try to combat public drunkenness, prostitution, petty theft, and other problems attributed to the transient population. Reacher views himself as someone who helps the communities he visits, rather than being a nuisance.
