In the atrium scene at the beginning, where Spock gives Kirk a copy of "A Tale of Two Cities", a wide shot shows several plants in the room around them. This was accomplished with a foreground miniature - a miniature set placed between the camera and the actors, making the space look larger and more decorated than this actually is.
