The series premiered a decade after the cinema release of Il gladiatore (2000). The film was an Roman epic which took place in fictional ancient Roman history and the film starred Russell Crowe in his Oscar-winning performance as Maximus, a betrayed Roman general whom enters the arena as a gladiator as he seeks revenge upon Marcus Aurelius's son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) whom murdered Maximus's wife and son.
