James Marsters had quite a bit of creative input on the look of Piccolo. The character was originally supposed to look more human to reduce any chance of uncanny valley, but James Marsters knew that fans would not approve of his original look, so when James Wong was not on set one day, he secretly had the makeup artists give him a different look for Piccolo that was more faithful to the character to show to Wong, who approved of the idea.
