There is an extended dialogue sequence of the climactic confrontation between the Engineer and Peter Weyland in the digital and Blu-Ray deleted scenes, where Weyland explains his reasons for wanting more life. He uses David as an example of how he himself has become a god and therefore believes himself entitled to eternal life, saying that he wants to perfect his own creation and thus implying that David is merely a stepping stone for something better. David, more than likely, uses this as a motivation to begin his experiments in creating the Xenomorph from Shaw's body in Alien: Covenant (2017). This also explains, potentially, why the Engineer is so appalled by David and Weyland, decapitating the former and using his head as a weapon on the latter: more than likely, the Engineers were a vain race that didn't want their creation to put themselves on equitable level, by copying them and creating new life as well, so him attacking David first is to psychologically break Weyland before the killing blow.
