Thorin's father Thráin went missing during the battle of Azanulbizar against Azog's army, but was never confirmed dead, and Azog mentions having encountered him. In the books, following the battle, Thráin continued to live with his people, but went missing during an attempt to reclaim Erebor 46 years later (which was almost 100 years before the start of the Hobbit novel). Gandalf found Thráin five years later in Dol Guldur, where he had been captured, tortured, and driven mad. These events are referred to in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013).
