According to the book "James Bond: The Secret World of 007" (2006) by Alastair Dougall, "Top operatives of S.P.E.C.T.R.E., and (Ernst Stavro) Blofeld himself, could sometimes be recognized by a distinctive octopus ring, which symbolized the organization's tentacular reach into the murkiest depths of world crime."
