Dorothy, the young lady who helps Tillie with the housework, was played by Barbara Randolph. At the time, Randolph was a singer who was under contract to Berry Gordy at Motown Records. In 1966 Gordy had planned to take Diana Ross of the Supremes and spin her off into a solo act and replace her in the group with Randolph. That did not materialize, as Gordy soon realized that the fans of the group were enamored with all three Supremes and that taking Ross solo might not go over well publicly. Gordy next considered using Randolph as a replacement for Supremes member Florence Ballard, who at the time was battling depression, alcoholism, and a very adversarial relationship with both Gordy and Ross. However, any idea of Randolph replacing Ballard was nixed by Ross, as she was upset by the notion that Randolph had been considered as a replacement for herself. Ballard would be replaced by singer Cindy Birdsong in July of 1967. In the end Randolph never ended up joining the Supremes, nor did she have any substantive solo career with the label.
