The film has similarities with E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982). Both feature a young boy that befriends an outsider that is perused by powerful organizations. Ron and Barney even escape their pursuers while on a scooter vehicle powered by the outsider, calling back to the famous ET bicycle escape.
