There is a theory about the reason Il-nam, revealed to be the dying mastermind behind the games, gave Gi-hun his own jacket instead of simply handing Gi-hun's back once the latter won the marble game. Il-nam's jacket was numbered 001 and could have been given to Gi-hun as a way to tell the workers not to eliminate Gi-hun from the contest before the game started, perhaps due to Gi-hun's kindness from the start as it let Il-nam experience the joy of his childhood games with a friend again. Coincidentally, Gi-hun is the only one we see Il-nam speak to about rejoining the games.
