The film was originally developed at MGM, who acquired the script at $2 million and immediately cast Kevin James in the title role, but as their financial woes worsened when production began, it became a co-production with Columbia (owned by Sony, who also owned a 25% stake in MGM at the time). It was originally going to be distributed in North America by MGM (with co-production partner Sony Pictures to distribute internationally at first), but due to uncertainty surrounding their impending fate, the domestic rights were transferred to Sony in the spring of 2010 and distribution of the film came full circle at the studio.
