The writers stated that the greedy and money-obsessed Ferengi were meant to be a reminder for the 24th century humans on the show of how their own species used to be in the 20th century. Over the course of the series, the writers also explored the good sides of Ferengi culture, such as their tight family relations and their relatively peaceful disposition.
