Hugh Grant confirmed in a 2016 interview with Howard Stern that he was offered the lead role after Charlie Sheen was fired. He turned it down because no script or even a character description existed, and because of the tight TV schedules he would have to sign-on without those in place. He said the money offered was "stratospheric", and that he likes the show.
