Of the many changes the film makes to the book, the most overlooked one is very significant: in the novel the reader learns in the Foreword, by John Ray, Jr., not only that Humbert Humbert died of a heart attack while awaiting trial for murder (as noted in the film's epilogue) but also that Lolita died giving birth to a stillborn girl on Christmas Day, 1952. The film's epilogue does not mention her death, permitting the viewer to imagine that Lolita lived on.
