One of the inspirations to film the second and third installments back-to-back were issues Richard Lester had faced with I tre moschettieri (1973) and Milady (1974). The two Musketeers films had started out as only one movie, but because of the long running time it was split into two. When it became known that this was happening, the actors of the Musketeers films, backed by the Screen Actors Guild, demanded to be paid for two films and not just one. For the Back to the Future sequels, Zemeckis originally planned them as two separate productions, but shooting them back-to-back proved more cost-effective.
