Captain James Deakins (played by Jamey Sheridan)'s departure from the squad was never fully explained, but it may have had to do with his protecting Mike Logan during a case at the end of Season 6 in which Logan had gotten into an altercation with a suspect and Deakins backed him up on his innocence to Internal Affairs. This was a similar end, or what would have been, to Logan punching the racist Assemblyman (played by Daniel Hugh Kelley) during the final episode of Law & Order Season 5.
