In Season 3, Richie Foley gained super-powers and became Static's crime fighting partner Gear. This was done because it was becoming hard to fit him into the episodes and the producers wanted to keep the "chemistry" between voice actors Phil LaMarr (Static) and Jason Marsden (Richie) intact. There was also a positive response from children in focus groups, so the decision seemed pretty obvious to the TV series' producers. Ratings increased after Richie's character obtained super-powers; Dwayne McDuffie affirmed that this is what secured the renewal for a new season. In the series, it was explained that Richie gained his super-powers as a delayed reaction from being around Virgil Hawkins, whose clothes reeked of the gas created after the Big Bang.
