Metru Nui was initially envisioned as a dark, mysterious-looking cave system, with bio-mechanical architecture forming organic-looking structures along its length, and distant light sources shining eerie light on the otherwise dark environment. It more-or-less followed the design philosophy of the "Biopunk" science fiction genre, and it was even visualized as such on the storyboards for Bionicle: Mask of Light (2003). During that movie's production, Metru Nui was reimagined as a bright and colorful utopian city-island instead. It was still located inside a cave, but the cave was made larger, Metru Nui was relocated to its center, the ceiling was made to look like bright sky, and a silvery sea surrounds the island instead of barren terrain.
