This film officially establishes the 23rd century timeline as the time period for Star Trek (1966) and for its films. Before this film, this had never been officially established which century the original series took place. According to Gene Roddenberry, the original series could have easily taken place between the 21st and 31st centuries, and Stardates were used to allow for this ambiguity in the timeline.
