Marla Gibbs has worked as a reservations agent for United Airlines while struggling as an actress. When she landed The Jefferson's she kept the job part time due to the fact that she was only guaranteed to be payed 7 out of 13 episodes during the first two seasons. By the end of season 2 series producers were surprised to find out that Gibbs still held that job. Gibbs was being used in more episodes than her original 7 out of 13 commitment. Gibbs wryly told producers she kept the job due to the fact that they (the producers) hadn't given her a reason to quit it. This was Gibbs subtle hint that she would like a contract that would make her a regular and thus guarantee her pay for every episode taped in the season. The producers got the hint and beginning in season three Gibbs was signed as a regular and quit her job at United Airlines. Interestingly while still working for United after having been on the series callers who got Gibbs as their agent would often comment how familiar sounding her voice was.
